Here's what you need to know...

We recieve a large number of enquiries from people wanting to train and work as Ambulance Care Attendants / Ambulance Care Assistants (ACA’s) either privatly or with the Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS).

NIAS are responsible for providing the emergency and non-emergency ambulance service provision within Northern Ireland, this includes managing the private contractors who work on their behalf providing non-emergency transport on the non-emergency contract.

What qualifications do NIAS use to train their Patient Care Services staff?

There are key Qualifications required if you have ambitions to apply to NIAS to work on their non-emergency Patient Care Service (PCS). NIAS subscribe to the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE) preferred education provider Future Awards and Qualifications Ltd (FutureQuals) and NIAS use two key qualification for their ACA’s, which include a driving qualification, and a clinical qualification.

These qualifications are:

  • FutureQuals Level 3 Award in Patient Care Services: Ambulance Driving (RQF)
  • FutureQuals Level 3 Award in Patient Care Services: Non-Urgent Care Services (RQF)

What qualifications do ACA's working for Private Ambulance Services have?

The Qualification stipulated in the previous Non-Emergency Tender by NIAS for staff employed by private ambualnce service providers was “equivilent to the Institute of Healthcare Development (IHCD) First Person on Scene Basic); however this training programme was withdrawn in December 2015, read moreĀ here

NIAS did specify one Qualification which has gained signifgiant ground within the private sector becuase of it’s progressive pathway, and that was the Qualsafe First Response Emergency Care (more commonly known as FREC)

The FREC qualifications include:

  • Qualsafe Awards First Response Emergency Care (Level 3 RQF)
  • Qualsafe Awards Level 4 Certificate in First Response Emergency Care (RQF)

We offer both these qualifications, however it is noteworthy that NIAS do not recognize these external qualifications as the same, as the FutureQuals Level 3 Award in Patient Care Services: Non-Urgent Care Services (RQF) if your ambition was to try and achieve employment directly with NIAS. These qualifications are only recognized as being the minimum standard for Private Ambulance Service staff working on behalf of NIAS on the non-emergency contract.

What qualifications do NIAS use to train their Emergency Ambulance Crews?

There are key Qualifications required if you have ambitions to apply to NIAS to work on their Accident & Emergency (A&E) vehicles. As above NIAS subscribe to the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE) preferred education provider Future Awards and Qualifications Ltd (FutureQuals) and NIAS use two key qualification for their ACA’s, which include a driving qualification, and a clinical qualification.

These qualifications are:

  • FutureQuals Level 3 Certificate in Emergency Response Ambulance Driving (RQF)
  • FutureQuals Level 4 Diploma in Associate Ambulance Practitioner (RQF)
